A Song Of Ice And Fire-A Book Review

Name: A Song Of Ice And Fire

Author: George R.R Martin

Genre: Epic Fantasy

This story happens in the continents, Westeros and Essos and the ruling of the kings and queens and also about the Others who prowl the North near the Wall The Wall is made of ice and the men of the Night’s Watch, guard the Wall from their enemies, the Others and the Free Folk, who live beyond the Wall who have a king known as ”King-Beyond-The-Wall” or Mance Rayder, who is as lowborn as anyone and doesn’t even wear a crown.

The king, Robert Baratheon, soon appoints Eddard Stark to be Hand Of The King and he agrees but he is executed by the new king, Joffrey Baratheon when he reads the will of King Robert when he dies of a boar attack. Sansa Stark, King Joffrey’s betrothed, is held captive with the Lannisters but flees during the wedding of Joffrey and Margaery Tyrell. Joffrey dies after drinking wine his dwarf uncle, Tyrion Lannister (Sansa’s husband) serves him and Tyrion flees too when Cersei, his sister confines him to a cell for his execution with the help of his brother, Jaime.

Arya Stark, Sansa’s sister is nowhere to be found but is captured by Yoren, who thinks that she is a boy to join the night’s watch but he dies and she is captured by the Tickler, who takes her sword that her bastard half-brother, Jon gave her before leaving to join the night’s watch. She then works in the kitchens at Harrenhal to serve Roose Bolton commonly known as the ‘Leech Lord’. But she escapes with Gendry and Hot Pie. She is found by the Lightning Lord, Lord Beric Dondarrion, and she is captured again by the Hound but she leaves him to die of his wounds during the attack with the Tickler. Arya finds her sword again. She then goes on a ship which lands to Braavos in hope of finding Syrio Forel, her teacher who showed her how to be a water dancer but in vain. She enters a temple where she serves The Many Faced God.

Sansa finds herself with Lord Littlefinger, Lord Petyr Baelish, who was previously in love of her mother, Catelyn Tully who decides to hide her from the Lannisters, who think that she and Tyrion worked together to kill Joffrey. She takes the new name of Alayne Stone pretending to be Lord Petyr’s bastard daughter. Lysa Arryn, Catelyn Tully’s sister offers to marry Sansa with her own son, Robert Arryn but she is killed by Lord Petyr, her new husband when she tries to push her through the Moon Door. Alayne is then betrothed to Harry The Heir, who will be the heir of Eyrie, when Robert dies.

Jon Snow, Eddard Stark’s bastard, is appointed the Lord Commander of the Night’s Watch when Lord Commander Mormont is killed during their stay at Craster’s. Jon invites the free folk to join the Night’s Watch but soon, he is nearly killed by his own men, when he tells them not to raise their swords against the giant, Wun Wun or they will provoke him. (It is not said if he survives or not)

Daenerys Targaryen, the Mad King’s daughter is married off by her brother to the Dothraki, Khal Drogo, a horselord. He is gravely injured during a battle and is offered help by a maegi, Mirri Maz Duur, who betrays both of them by killing Dany’s stillborn son, Rhaego in her belly using sorcery. Dany soon hatches 3 dragons, who she name, Drogon, Rheagal and Viserion. She crosses the Red Waste, Quarth and soon conquers Astapor and Meereen where she marries the noble hisdhar zo loraq to make peace between the Sons Of The Harpy and herself. Soon, Dany flies off on Drogon and lands in the Dothraki sea, a vast grassland where she gets lost and comes across the new Khals of Vaes Dothrak. (The story ends here. Not mentions at all in the winds of winter what happens next [not yet])

Robb Stark, Lady Catelyn and Lord Eddard’s firstborn son is crowned King in The North [King Of The Trident] fights in many battles capturing Jaime Lannister who becomes his captive. He marries Jeyne Westerling against his mother’s wishes but Catelyn soon realises that she loves Robb and she has a gentle heart. Robb is killed in the Red Wedding and his mother as well (who rises again when Berric Dondarrion saves her, 3 days after she dies).

Bran and Rickon Stark are presumed killed by Theon Greyjoy, the new Prince Of Winterfell but in fact Theon killed the miller’s 2 sons. Bran and Rickon go separate ways. Bran with Hodor (Bran has broken his legs during a fall) and Meera and Jojen Reed while Rickon goes with Osha, a wilding. Bran meets the three-eyed crow who teaches him how to become a greenseer and to see through weirwood trees (sacred trees the northmen worship).

Tyrion Lannister flees and is helped by Magister Illyrio to flee and makes the shocking discovery of finding Prince Rhaegar’s son, Aegon Targaryen long believed dead, alive. Unfortunately, in Meereen he and Penny, a dwarf too are made slaves and they flee to join Brown Ben Plumm, who knew Daenerys but betrays her. Soon, a war begins between Yunkai’i and Meereen and Tyrion glimpses two dragons soaring in the sky…

The End

This story was told from different points of view but I have not told for all. Example, Jaime, Brienne, Victarion, Catelyn, Cersei.

It was that type of amazing book that you think was made for you to read. If you like magic, imaginary animals, knights, battles, dragons and castles, I highly recommend to read this book.

My ratings:

Rating: 5 out of 5.

Portable Magic - A Book Review Blog

Welcome to my book review blog. I am a NetGalley professional reader. I take part in quite a few book clubs on Goodreads. My first love is Horror, but in the past few years I have developed an infatuation with Fantasy. I believe starred reviews do not give the full scope of a review, which is why you won't see them here. Happy Reading!
